Final Project - Eric Neugeboren

A peek inside quarantine in Cabin John, Maryland

By: Eric Neugeboren

My dog, Jackson, is often silent and thinking to himself. Here, he is about to sleep on a sunny afternoon.
An abandoned house stands at Lock 8 of the C&O Canal in Cabin John, Maryland.
My mom, Mimi Darmstadter, takes a break from checking emails for her job as a life coach to play a game of Candy Crush. She has passed over 600 levels so far in four years of playing.

A man stands alone in a mural in a tunnel underneath the Clara Barton Parkway. Other graffiti graces the tunnel's interior, and passersby see the artwork on the way to the C&O Canal.

When he is out and about, Jackson prefers the attention to be on him. At the place where he goes when my family goes on vacation, the workers say he assumes the position at the top of the dog hierarchy.

A blue sock is left on a path to the C&O Canal.

Jackson does many random things — and that includes tracking mud. Here, he leaves muddy pawprints on my mom's yoga mat.

When Jackson is not stepping on the yoga mat, it belongs to my mom. Ever since the coronavirus outbreak began, she has turned the hallway into an impromptu yoga studio, where she watches her instructor on a Facebook live stream.

The Clara Barton Parkway in Cabin John, Maryland, remains less congested than usual, as more people are working from home.

Even when Jackson is asleep or silent, he does have company. Here, as Jackson sleeps in the sunroom, my mom catches up on a book for her job as a life coach.

Two pairs of trees on the Potomac River mirror each other.

When the weather is nice, Jackson often rolls around in the yard. This prompts my brother, Ari Neugeboren, to pamper him.

Jackson is always quick to respond when the dishwasher opens. It is a prime opportunity for him to lick off any leftover food on dishes and silverware.

Passover dinner is an annual tradition in my house, even when there is a global pandemic occurring. This year, the meal called for chicken, green beans, latkes and kugel.

And the most inseparable bond in the house is Ari and Jackson. Here, Jackson attempts to lick Ari — a rare occurrence since he usually only sticks out his tongue when food is nearby.
